Poorcraft is an edumacational comic for completely clueless people to help live within your means It covers things like creating a financial budget, prioritising your income so that essential bills are paid first rent mortgage loans car payments , to teaching yourself to cook, finding the right place to live and how to furnish it, to keeping yourself fit and healthy, as well as avoiding modern financial pitfalls like advance payday loans Some of the topics feel a bit too hippy dippy, like growin [...]

I hope that eventually people start giving this book to kids that graduate high school instead of that damn Dr Seuss book I learned how to cook a whole chicken, sew a button, and like 300 things to do with vinegar from this read What did I learn from the Seuss book That there are hundreds of imaginary cultures and creatures that I will never ever see, and that every day I don t burn my fingerprints off and light out for foreign lands is a waste What a drag.Seriously, this is a great book Comics [...]

Most of the advice in here is the sort of thing anyone who has ever been poor has already known about However, if you ve had it good up to now and you hit a slump, or you re headed off to college and need some real world advice, this would be a good pick Recommended for older teens and laid off CEOs.

I wavered on this book quite a bit I admit, the three star rating is probably a bit high, but I m giving the book the benefit of the doubt for what it is trying to do, and I accept that I am not the target audience.Poorcraft is about living well without spending a lot of money It takes the form of a friend struggling with bills, and our voice character walking her through changes she could make in her life It covers issues like food, transport, clothing, housing, though some of the topics like e [...]

There is a ton of information in this book and most of it is really great There are a few items that I took issue with, but for the most part it is full of really sound advice Trotman argues really fervently that no one should use credit cards, which is ridiculous They are really helpful with building credit and the only thing that Trotman actually has against them is that you should never be spending money than you have Owning a credit card does not necessitate irresponsible spending She would [...]

    Kevin Hogan

A lot of useful information, clearly presented Only a few of the pages were wall of text.File Under Reference

    Alexander Case

This book reminded me a lot of Larry Gonick s Cartoon Guide To books, like The Cartoon Guide to Computers It does a pretty good job of explaining some important concepts in an entertaining fashion That said, there is some important information that the book omits, and some significant geographic biases that reflect the book s applicability. The book has a metropolitan geographic bias going with it There are pieces of advice that are pretty much designed to work great if you re living in a city or [...]

While as it doesn t make much sense as a comic book, and the info it gives is mostly American centric, as a list of things to consider it s extremely useful Even if not all options are available to non American citizens, it really does show that there are solutions to many problems Definitely on the list of the most useful adulting advice I ve seen so far.

    Starline Hodge

    Great tips on living cheaply.

    Morgan

Very US centric, but importantly also extremely patronising and glib, in the but it s SO EASY way that ignores the actual obstacles and difficulties so many people face.

I d been waiting to read this for about 5 years, and it just recently got reissued so got repurchased by libraries was great I loved it It was a little hippieish guide to saving, frugality and knowing the very basics of things like health insurance and scholarships and being debt free The hardest thing about living a simple life, I think, is letting go of your creature comforts, but the hardest thing about writing a book about living a simpler life is that they have to tell it to you straight Li [...]

I enjoyed this a lot, and it has a lot of fantastic advice, but I feel like it s designed for people who live in walkable cities in most cities, getting around in a reliable, timely manner without a car isn t just hard, it s almost impossible.I also wasn t totally sold on cutting up my one single credit card, which is the reason why I have outstanding credit at a fairly young age I feel like it d be better to encourage people to use their credit responsibly, rather than avoiding it entirely Do I [...]

Cute artwork, TUUURRRRIBLE advice Clearly, this book is intended for someone in an urban environment i.e Portland, NYC, maybe LA If you re in the burbs or further, you ll be SOL one of the first pieces of advice is to get rid of the car On top of that, the author unequivocally states that moving housing situations is tax deductible sorry, kiddos, that s only if you re moving than 75 miles and it s for work reasons I stopped reading at that point There are probably good tips sprinkled throughout [...]

    Veronica

Some solid advice on shopping, stocking a kitchen, dealing with loans, etc for those who like their text guides with some visual aides Sometimes a little condescending in tone the audience stand in character is a stereotypically feminine woman with long hair who wears impractical shoes, chose her car because it s cute, and keeps repeating that she can t possibly do any of the things the author stand in character is suggesting but still usable Helpful list of additional resources in the back.

    Kyle Andrew

My partner introduced me to Poorcraft several years ago This is an incredibly helpful, must have guide for any household While not all the advice will apply to you I ve found that a lot less of it works for me at this stage of my life , it s an invaluable handbook for taking care of yourself on a budget.

    Laura

Invaluable resource in an approachable, enjoyable package Although slightly out of date, the methods described to budget your life without destroying fun are applicable and so useful Everyone should read this.

    Molly

It was a little simplistic for me, but may have been just what I needed 15 years ago It tries to cover alot of ground but anyone interested in the topic can only really use this as a jumping off point for further research.

    Sophie

I agree with some other reviewers that this book would really benefit from an appendix listing the resources it recommends This is a basic, but very handy book on adulting that would definitely be beneficial to anyone starting out especially suburban kids

    Kathleen

A great guide to living well with less You can have whatever you want, so long as you budget for it Keep in mind, you might not be able to have it all , or at least not all at once, or not at first You ll get there Baby steps This book can help.

If I could replace every copy of that Dr Seuss book with this in the hands of high school or college graduates, I would in a flash.

    karen

i couldn t make it halfway through this it s your usual frugal finances advice but with a slightly judge y tone i m still counting it as a read book because i can P

    Mary Sepulveda

I would buy this book for any kid just starting out on their own Actually, I d give it to them well before that so they are familiar with all the principles of using money wisely

    Molly

Not bad, but not much I didn t already know Great starting point for younger people trying to take control of their finances.

    Brian

some good advice, some bad advice.

    Julie Gazca

    HIGHLY RECOMMEND Great graduation gift

    Jessica

Solid advice I bought a used copy for myself after borrowing it from the library Some of it is a little out of date but it s still a really helpful book.

    Jennifer Warren

Very good advice for anyone who wants to maximize their money and live within their means.

    Stephanie

I think this is aimed at those in their late teens or early 20s than those of us in our mid to late thirties It focuses on finding ways to live better without spending lots of money Finding a room in a big house might be cheaper than an apartment on your own Get to know what s within walking distance and how the public transit works, and you might be able to do away with your car and it s assorted costs All of it is great, IF you can change where you live, and move about a city It really is adv [...]

I helped kickstart this project Spike and Diana Nock were familiar to me before Poorcraft, because of their great webcomics, Templar AZ and The Intrepid Girlbot, respectively They ve put together an excellent little guide to frugal living for young people in urban areas When they pitched the idea on Kickstarter, they described how the frugal living books they found all seemed geared towards people in rural or suburban environments, where there s space to grow food and less public transportation [...]

    Paul Mirek

It s not surprising to see a guidebook on frugal living come out of the small press community, but the deceptively animated cover belies the sheer value this slim volume holds C Spike Trotman and Diana Nock have created the kind of textbook that should be handed out to teens in sopho year at the latest, since I would have liked to have the material on planning and applying for college on hand at the time There are also chapters on just about every aspect of adult life, from cooking to cleaning t [...]
