The Book of Seven HandsWritten by Barth AndersonRead by Nick PodehlThis is a novella from the Foreworld saga and I must admit, this is my first book from that series I don t know if any of the characters overlap from other books, but I had no trouble getting into this book or understanding what was going on.The general setting is in 13th century Spain where the Inquisition is searching for renowned swordsmen who are seeking the book of seven hands Those two men are Basilio and Alejo, students of [...]
Bit of a weak beginning but good action packed ending Having it take place in Spain is an added bonus with the characters a good bunch of swashbucklers Quite enjoyable though I read the other SideQuest s long enough ago to be uncertain how I d rank it with respect to the others.
I am sure this book s swordplay is extensively researched Would it have been so difficult to have someone with even partial knowledge of spanish give it a read At first it was just annoying, like saying hedges of matorral which is like saying hedges of bush but it gets even worse as the book moves forward, from writing P rez Per z to writing Guzm n with a strange diacritic that looks like horns in the u and has never been part of spanish. And then and then there is the only whole spanish phrase i [...]
Charismatic sword fighters who are not what they seem The Inquisition Alchemists and a hidden book of arcane knowledge What s not to like This is a super entertaining and exciting swishbuckler the plot moves along quickly though I did have to pay attention closely to remember who all the players were and what they were after and the language is as muscular and as playful as the swordsmen themselves. What s even fascinating is that this novella was inspired by an actual historical personage bit 1 [...]
Even were I not a fan of the Foreworld, I d have picked this novella up I greatly enjoyed the pacing and characterization of The Patron Saint of Plagues, and nearly rushed home to update my kindle and read this new work I m kicking myself now for not downloading it on my phone, because I woke up in the middle of the night to finish my initial read, and will likely do so at least once before the week is out.
I ve read all but two of the Foreworld SideQuests and I thought this one was the best Thought it s set several hundred years after the events in the Mongoliad, it references the OMVI to make the link It seemed a little longer than the other SideQuests, but had action drama than normal I plan to check out other stuff Barth Anderson has written.
Another side story set in the Foreworld uh world This one set in Spain during the Inquisition, Although at his point the Pope has banned the Shield Brethern, although there are hints of them here and there But there is a twist with one of the main characters I did not see coming, althogh looking back some of the hints were there.
A fun, if light, historical adventure tale.
