    Shirley unapologetically self centered and ambitious is a far entertaining protagonist than some of the previous protagonists have been Thompson is determined to be realistic in terms of what happens to her characters so they make stupid decisions, have kids out of wedlock, marry the wrong person, etc and it s really a relief when you re like, Okay, you kind of deserved that Of this book s other protagonists, Lilly remains entertainingly lazy and terrible Eirlys from book one returns and martyr [...]
